Kids
CAN-BIKE Camp
In
the summer of 2006, Toronto's Bicycle Safety Partnership launched
the KIDS CAN-BIKE CAMP pilot program to give children from low income
families the opportunity to experience safe cycling as a form of
recreation, transportation and healthy living.

"My
childs level of confidence riding on the road and bike
paths is amazing. She never rode on the road before taking
the course."- parent
|
Throughout
the summer, 71 children who attended camp were awarded a brand new
bike, helmet, lock, water bottle, reflector, bell and backpack of
their very own!
A
total of eight, week-long camps ran between July 4th and August
25th with an average of 10 kids in attendance for a grand total
of 81 children participating for the summer.
The first
week consisted of 10 youth, ages 12-15, from the Canadian Forces
Moss Park Cadet Unit. This was the only group that did not receive
the donation of bikes and equipment because the Cadet Program provided
all the necessary equipment.
|
"At
the end of the week session my child was able to handle a
bike like a pro and had learned bike safety."- parent
|
For the
remaining seven weeks of camp, children aged 9-12 were identified
by agencies working within the Bicycle Safety Partnership. These
children were provided with bikes and equipment for the duration
of camp, which they took home for keeps on the last day.
| "The
thing that I like best was when we went biking on the road."
- participant |
The Camp
operated out of a local recreation centre, using the two ice rink
changing rooms as classroom space, the rink enclosure as a practise
pad for bike handling skill development, local streets for on-road
teaching and the swimming pool and gym for extra recreation and
learning opportunities.
The
end-of-camp Bike Hike, a highlight of the camp for the children
and staff, involved a day trip by bike to the Beaches or to Wards
Island.
The camp
was run by three CAN-BIKE trained instructors, a lifeguard for the
trip to the Island, and supported by two staff from Transportation
Planning and on-site support from Parks and Recreation.

daughter was one of the lucky children to participate in the
